What Shield war?
Between October 2, and November 8, 1944, the first Canadian Army-led and series of military operations with the assistance of Polish and British units was the Shield War. The goal of the operation was to control the Shield River from the Axis Forces and to establish a shipping route into Antwerp, which could force allies into North-Western Europe.
This battle was the most bloody and most important of all the campaign for the first Kandyan army. A total of 12,873 Allied casualties were reported in the five-week fighting, with half the losses coming from the Canadian military.
Despite the importance of raising the Shield River by many officers of the Allied forces, the British General Bernard Montgomery instead emphasized what Operation Market Garden’s destructive military plan was.
Looking back, Allied forces preferred to take the Sheldt River, which could have halted the retreat of the German 15th Army from France, and helped the Allies advance into the Axis-controlled Netherlands, thus invading Germany. Without a shipping route to Antwerp, US forces could not receive the supplies they needed when they invaded the Netherlands.
