History of Salar Jung Museum

The Salar Jungs have always had the zeal to collect things from different places all around the world, but the most collection was built by Salar Jung III also known as Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan. After giving up his post as Prime Minister, Nawad VII, collected all the possible antiques over a period of more than forty years.

The permanent house of the Salar Jungs was the “Dewan-Deodi”, after the death of the final heir of the family all the precious collectibles were organized by Dr.James Cousins on the request of  Sri M.K. Velodi who was the Chief Civil Administrator of the Hyderabad State at that time. This museum which was established in the 1950s does not cease to impress anyone, and is a beautiful place for the history-lovers.

The museum is very close to the Central Bus Station if you prefer the busy, then auto should be taken from the bus station to reach the museum. But if you do not prefer the hassle of changing transportation then taking a cab is better than traveling in your own car considering the parking facility fiasco. What are the collections available in the Salar Jung Museum?

The splendid collection of antiques present in the SJM is not only from India but also from most of the countries around the world, including from Middle Eastern countries. The artifacts aren’t the only things making this place special, there’s a Children’s section which is used to help enlighten young minds with the use of rare manuscripts.

The most spectacular artifact in the museum collected by SJM I is the “Veiled Rebecca” which is an all-marble statue present in the museum and is called so because the statue is of a female whose face is covered with a veil.

There are a lot of manuscripts from different languages like Arabian and Persian dated back to almost a hundred years. There are separate rooms for artifacts from different countries, and there are a lot of European artifacts here comprising mostly of the beautifully done oil and water paintings.
