Panaji also known as Panjim the capital of Goa, is known for its sightseeing and tourist places, filled with beaches and old churches with a rich history from the Portuguese times.

Panaji Goa is a city full of tourists at every time of the year, it is the major part of North Goa, every tourist place is accessible through Panjim. Panjim is the tourist hub all year long, Panjim is the first stop everyone who comes to Goa go to.

The Panjim city has the Mandovi river flowing through it, with old houses with the architecture of old Panaji Goa today.

History of Panaji city

Panjim goes back to the 11th Century under the rule of Kadamba King, first, it was known as the Pahajani Khali then later the Portuguese named it as Panjim, they also named it as Nova Goa meaning New Goa after the old Goa was demolished.

Panjim being the Capital of Goa was declared first by the Portuguese, and now it still continues to be and also is the headquarters in North Goa.

Goa is known for its beaches and its old churches, which are marked as the introduction of Christianity in India.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

One of the most important Basilicas in India is the Basilica of Bom Jesus which is situated in Panaji, and also comes under the UNESCO World Heritage site, it is 10km away from Panaji, the name itself is the meaning and reflect the meaning of “Holy Jesus”.

It is rich in history and is considered a holy place amongst the Christians. It also consists of various marks on the Church and has an art museum consisting of Italian paintings from the 1600s.

Immaculate Conception Church

Next comes the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, a very old Chapel in Goa which is also very popular and is considered a must-see place in Goa.

It is located on a hillock in Panjim, it is known that this church was built in 1541. Later in 1600 it was replaced and rebuilt after the ruins. Also, it is known for the festivities conducted on the 8th of December.

Dona Paula

Dona Paula Panaji, situated in Panjim about 7kms away and is referred to as the lover’s paradise. Dona Paula attracts a lot of tourists it is a small beach with two statuses of Young India and Mother India.

Dona Paula is known for the history of a princess named Dona Paula who was in love with a local fisherman and since they could not get together, they jumped off the cliff and hence the name Dona Paula.

Chapel of St Sebastian Panaji, located in the city which is said to be built during the 1900s, the chapel was built to honor St Sebastian who helped the plague-infected people, cured them, and saved the needy during crises. The church is also known for the festivities held for the feast of Our lady of Livrament.
